  • 'LIVE in London' - Music Cafe & English Conversation
    WHO? Any foreign language visitors to London are welcome! Many of our guests are studying at language schools or working in London.
    WHAT? The café is designed for English conversation, and offers a great chance to practise English with native speakers living in London. ‘LIVE in London’ is hosted by Christians, but most guests are from another or no religion. Each evening includes a short talk in simple English introducing Christianity.

  • City Glow, Mountain Whisper
    City Glow, Mountain Whisper, is Aoshima¡Çs first major public art commission in the UK. For the work, Aoshima interpreted the bustle and energy of the city, and the desire for calm within it. Her work transcends traditional representation, working in a digital medium to create unique and extraordinary worlds; seamlessly integrating the age-old tradition of Japanese scroll painting with the contemporary aesthetics of manga, the pop phenomena of Japanese comic books and graphics.

  • Japanese Crafts Exhibition
    This exhibition of contemporary Japanese crafts will feature ceramic works by Living National Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka alongside new works by Ryoji Koie, Yasuhisa Kohyama, Shozo Michikawa and Kouichi Uchida. Katie Jones will present metal work by Koji Hatakeyama, Toru Kaneko and Hiroki Iwata, as well as fibre work by Naoko Serino and indigo wall hangings by textile artist Shihoku Fukumoto.

    The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation presents this exhibition, which shows a collection of works by one of Asia¡Çs leading contemporary textile artists. Michiko Uehara works exclusively in silk and other natural fibres, and uses natural dyes, many produced in her own garden in Okinawa, Japan.

    21st October (Saturday) from 11.00am to 5.00pm, in the Great Hall of Manchester Town Hall, Albert Square THE JAPAN SOCIETY NORTH WEST JAPAN DAY It promises to be a great day out: if you have never seen Japanese Taiko Drumming you are in for a great treat: Throughout the day there will be demonstrations of martial arts including kendo (fencing) and kyudo (archery). For those interested in the finer arts there will be ikebana (flower arranging), origami (paper folding), Japanese gardens, music, ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), kimono and embroidery.
